In January 2013, Heather Arnet, WGF’s CEO traveled to Brazil to meet with the team at ELAS to explore the changing political and economic roles women are playing in Brazil’s global leadership. What made WGF & Heather want to do this?
Growing up, Heather Arnet’s grandmother, Vivian (now age 96), regaled her with stories of her great grandmother, Mary, the suffragette who marched the streets of New York for women to earn the right to vote. “You must vote in every election – large and small,” she’d say, “because other women fought and died for you to have that right.” Vivian’s secret dream – passed down from her mother – was to someday help elect the first woman president. In her lifetime, fifty women would run for President of the United States. None of them successfully.
Just two years, after Hillary Clinton put “18 million cracks” in the American Presidential glass ceiling, Dilma Rousseff was sworn in as the 36th President of Brazil. Now, as Brazil prepares to host the World Cup in 2014, the Olympics in 2016, and works to keep its growing economy on track, the eyes of the world are on this emerging world leader during her first term in office.

Dilma Rousseff, former Marxist guerrilla, Minister of Energy, and Chief of Staff is leading Brazil during a time of unprecedented economic growth and transition. Brazil, a country that is both energy independent and rich in natural resources has recently overtaken the UK to become the world’s sixth-biggest economy. It is a country on the rise, led by women.
Inspired by her grandmother’s story, Arnet will travel to Brazil in 2013 to interview women from different regions and socio economic backgrounds asking them to share their stories of how in the span of a single generation, this dynamic and beautiful country, went from historic poverty to historic riches; from rape in the streets to a woman in the Presidential palace. Why Brazil? Why Now?
Brazil, a country that is both energy independent and rich in natural resources, has recently overtaken the UK to become the world’s sixth-largest economy. International focus is on Brazil as they prepare to host the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympics. Now is a perfect time to take a closer look at this dynamic world leader and explore the role that women have played in the country’s economic expansion. Currently the United States is wrestling with many similar issues; how to expand economic opportunities; how to alleviate generational poverty; how to enhance corporate diversity; how to raise women’s voices in international leadership, we can look to Brazil for examples of what works.
Audience & Distribution
The film will debut at film screenings in Pittsburgh, PA and Rio de Jeneiro, Brazil and then air on Public Broadcasting Stations in both countries. As Brazil emerges as a more powerful economic leader, and global resource provider, and as the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics approach there is a great deal of interest in the U.S. and in Europe to learn more about this world power and its new President. Therefore there are several potential core audiences for viewership and distribution.
- The general public (especially in U.S., Europe, and in Brazil) through tv viewings and film screenings.
- Women (ages 18 -65) as a targeted audience
- Women ’s groups and organizations (for viewership and distribution)
- Corporate Sponsors of the World Cup/Olympics who might want to use it to show to employees to prep them for their trips to Brazil.
- High School and Universities (Especially Political Science, History, Women’s Studies, Economics, and Modern Languages Departments).
The methods that will be utilized to reach each of these distinct audiences include:
- Public Broadcasting television broadcasts and film festivals (in multiple countries)
- Potential Cable Network broadcast
- Speaking engagements at National and International women’s conferences
- Sales of the DVD for personal and educational use
- The following Universities have already agreed to host a screening of the film (Bryn Mawr University, Carnegie Mellon University, Chatham University, Carlow University, Duquesne University, Washington and Jefferson University).

WGF’s CEO, Heather Arnet will partner with award winning Director of Photography, Nathan Golan; Veronica Marques, Executive Director, of ELAS; and the production teams of Mind Over Media and WQED Multimedia; to direct and create Vamos Meninas as a one-hour documentary film to be premiered on WQED Multimedia in Spring 2014.
