GirlGov Leadership Profile: Meet Gigi

Gigi, a GirlGover, co-leads the Education committee!

After she was encouraged to apply from a Leadership Council member, Gigi felt that “GirlGov created a safe space to discuss issues [that I’d never discussed in public].  I never realized how important this is –the discovery felt magical.” During the 2016 Harrisburg Retreat, Gigi and her GirlGov sisters got to know each other on a deeper level by reflecting on their individual identity struggles. They bonded over the realization that each GirlGover is inspiring and supportive of her peers.
Once she decides to do something, Gigi makes it happen. Gigi serves on the Teen Advisory Council at the Carnegie Museum of Art, where she is currently helping plan a day-long program that will highlight diversity, resilience, and unrepresented populations.
And if that weren’t enough, Duolingo did a video on Gigi’s adventure in giving up social media for an entire year and teaching herself Italian instead. Watch her story here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NAKUpGvSTLw&feature=youtu.be
What’s next for this GirlGover? In December, Gigi will travel to Antarctica as one of four high school students who will conduct polar science research—and the entire program is facilitated in Spanish! After high school, Gigi plans to spend a gap year living in China to study Mandarin through the PA State Department. Afterwards, she will attend college to double major in environmental student and global studies, along with a language minor. Her post-graduate aspirations include joining the US Peace Corps and working on global environmental policy.
When she is not planning or attending protests, Gigi enjoys doing any activity in the great outdoors. She loves hiking, camping, sock climbing, and exploring new cities on her family’s’ cross country road trips. Gigi’s spends about three hours a day focusing on her art; her favorite art mediums are ceramics and watercolors. Jamming to music and going on late night adventures are an important part of her life.
