GirlGov Leadership Profile: Meet Serena

Serena, a senior literary art major, has been a GirlGover for 3 years!

One of Serena’s favorite experiences from last year was on the Harrisburg trip, when the cohort lobbied for comprehensive sexual education campaign. During the process, GirlGovers met with legislators and policy writers to stress the importance of comprehensive science-based sex education. For her final year in the GirlGov program, Serena is co-leading the Racial Justice Committee.
Serena serves as the co-President of the Feminist Student Union at her high school while also actively participating as a member of the Gender and Sexuality Student Union and the Black Student Union. She also works as a freelance writer and journalist for her school newspaper, Angsty Women of Color Magazine, Saturday Light Brigade Radio, Pittsburgh Youth Media, Youth Express, Sonic Blume Zine, and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette! Earlier this year, Serena attended the PA Governor’s School for Global and International Studies, and she also spent a month serving as a student ambassador in Peru!
After she graduates, Serena wants to spend a year traveling while doing diplomacy and cultural exchange work in foreign countries through a gap year program. Afterwards, Serena will choose a college with strong political science, political communication, or peace and conflict studies programs. She wants to attend law school with a concentration in human rights law and apply her experience to change policies for issues that matter to her. When Serena has some free time, she can be found devouring a book at the local teahouse. Serena writes, reads, and creates art that focus on social justice issues.
